A Championship for San Diego?

Posted on: February 16, 2008 8:58 pm
Unlike an illegitimate Garvey love-child who is practically kicking out of his womb in the seventh month so he can hit clutch NLCS  home runs and propagate the seed,  San Diego is LONG overdue.

From the Padres to the Aztecs, the ineptitude of the sports teams in this town is maddening. The adage "always a bridesmaid, but never a bride" comes to mind when it comes to San Diego sports. Sure we have experienced a few memorable seasons like the '84 Padres or the '94 Chargers, but it seems our teams always fall painfully short when they are on the biggest stages (The Padres own a gut punching 1 -8 World Series record, while the Chargers lone Super Bowl appearance was, for all intensive purposes, over in the first 8 minutes) In fact ,when San Diego sports teams aren't losing big games, we're losing franchises (the Rockets and Clippers both left town, while the Sockers and Gulls folded).  What I find especially odd is that San Diego sports fans should rather smug considering the recent successes of the Chargers and Padres (2 AFC West and NL West titles respectively). Yet, it seems our brush with great, err, goodness only seems to increase our collective burden of not being able to win the big one.

So what gives San Diego sports fans?  Is our city, dare I say cursed? How much longer do we have to bear this torch? What says you?

A Championship for San Diego?

i have never witnessed a championship team, whether its the aztecs, chargers, or padres. I even jumped shiped from the anaheim ducks to the saint louis blues the year before they won the stanley cup. Am i cursed or what?!

The Chargers have a real shot in the next two seasons for sure. Then the window begins to close because the Bolts will have to let a star or two go (depending on the next collective bargaining agreement, of course). They could keep the window open longer, but AJ Smith has gotten into the habit of trading away first-day picks. It makes me wonder.

The Padres will need a hot streak, say 13-of-15 to even out the cold snap, then solid baseball the rest of the way. 2009 is more realistic, but Alderson and Towers have to SPEND. Towers never pulled off the "big trade" in the off-season and it led to a terrible spring. Let's chase thoroughbreds, not dark horses for once in the off season.

Oh, and Steve Garvey is MY daddy. Mine, mine, mine!!!

A Championship for San Diego?

I agree that someday, someday, things will go SD's way.  I am not thinking that will be the case this year for the Pads; however, I really like the Bolts' chances this year, if, and only if, Turner puts the ball in LT's hands and the Defense realizes that blitzing now and then is not a bad thing!

A Championship for San Diego?

Well being a San Diego fan all my life, I grew up in the beautiful city and always had to deal with the ups and downs of our mighty Chargers and Padres !!!  Now is the time for them to go all the way,.. the Charger are improving every year and I do feel we are going to get the Super trophy, .. the Padres have gotten alot better than the Padres of yesterday, back in Jack Murphy Stadium with those retro yellow and brown uniforms. But as for this city being cursed... I dont think so, .. we will get a Championship here soon.  It would be awesome if we can take the Chargers and the Padres to win it in the same year,... can you imagine those parties down in the Gaslamp .. I could !!

I say why not?  I've been a season ticker holder for the Chargers for 4 years now and wouldn't mind seeing them go deep into the playoffs.

As for the Padres, if Arizona should stumble, there's hope there too.  Certainly the Dodgers won't be putting up any fight!

Either way, at least San Diego is putting quality teams out there for us to root for and what more could be asked?

Tony Gwynn was the most LOVED Padre.  Ozzy Smith and/or Dave Winfield may have been the best...

Eventually, AJ will deliver a Super Bowl champion to San Diego.
Baseball is a little harder.  Implement a salary cap and I think Towers would have a real shot at bringing a World Series winner to SD.

For all the crap San Diego fans are given... we sure have stayed loyal, considering no titles (Sockers excluded... I'm thinking major sports).  Can you think of any other city that deserves a champion more than San Diego?
